A Room that Makes a Statement

Who says a room’s function can’t just be plain fun? Cindy Rinfret of Rinfret LTD made sure this luxurious and layered recreation room had all the necessities for the family’s next sleepover: movie tech, tables for serving popcorn and drinks, and lots of comfy seating. But the pièce de resistance in this rock-n-roll rec room in Darien, CT, is the decoupaged wall mural. “The mural is very personal and an important focal point of the room. It creatively highlights the history of the family’s events and is executed in an innovative way that demands attention,” says Rinfret.

Band posters and pop culture icons mix with slogans and catch phrases that the family can add to over time. “I love that it is a living, breathing work of art that will grow as they make future memories,” says Rinfret. At the center of it all is a banner that says ‘Andy Warhol’s Velvet Underground.’ “We had to have a bit of Andy in this mural, and it also brings a graffiti art vibe,” adds Rinfret. “It’s very au courant and timeless, which says so much about the family’s energy and memories. This was not intended but ‘Velvet Under- ground’ is also a fun play on words since this room is ‘underground’ and layered in sumptuous fabrics.”
