With more than 37 hives, Dr. Katherine R. Casale and her partner C F Wengenroth, who own Fairfield, CT-based Monkey’s Pocket Apiary, make and sell a variety of raw, local honey products.
Throughout the process, Casale saw how hard the bees work and waste nothing. She was then inspired to recycle the wax produced during harvest and began making her own candles. She also learned that burning beeswax candles helps remove pollutants in the air. “So making candles uses wax that would otherwise be discarded and transforms it into a healthful product— a win-win for all of us,” she says.
Priced from $2 to $15, the 100 percent beeswax candles are made with no scents, color additives or chemicals, and come in a variety of sizes and designs. For spring, that includes Easter eggs and flowers, like tulips.
