Winston Flowers: Holiday Chic

Winston

Bring the outdoors in this winter with floral design that takes its cue from nature. David Winston, co-owner of Winston Flowers says, โ€œThe trend we are seeing most right now, and my personal preference, is less traditional red and green, and more natural, woodsy materials such as pine cones, branches, pods and evergreens.โ€ Channeling the winter woodlands is relatively simple; just look in your backyard for inspiration. Since this look is less holiday specific, it can carry you further into the winter months.

A banister garland is constructed of winter evergreens, magnolia leaves, pine cones and gold ribbon.

But there are considerations to be made in keeping things fresh. Winston explains, โ€œThe longest-lasting elements are ilex berries, winter evergreens, pieris, seeded eucalyptus, pods and pine cones, while longer-lasting flowers include calla lillies and orchids.โ€ Winter flowers and greenery will keep longer when placed in water, rather than laid on a mantel or banister, and a wreath on an outside door will typically last all season due to the cold temperatures. Says Winston: โ€œJust plan ahead, cycle your floral dรฉcor through the winter months and refresh it as needed around any events.โ€
