Artist Among Us: Painter Angel Mieres

Art History: Angel Mieres has been painting since he was eight years old. Then, it was portraits of classmates, sets for the school play and invitations for the school dance. Today, he works mostly in acrylics, but born and raised in Venezuela, where they sometimes wait on long lines just to buy bread, he learned to get creative when acrylics arenโ€™t readily available. Based in Venezuela, he started coming to Stamford, CT, to work with Nora Ochoa de Ellis at Embracing Art and Visual Art Sur. When heโ€™s in Stamford, he leads childrenโ€™s workshops with Ellis.
The Piece: โ€œAlone,โ€ acrylic on canvas, $2,100, www.visualartsur.com
Inspiration: At 16, Mieres fell in love with a beautiful girl, and won her heart with a poem by Pablo Neruda and a painting of a single flower. Today, that girl is his wife, and a majority of his paintings are that of three flowers, symbolizing their three boys. This piece is a nod to that first painting.
